Michael J. Penney
Leadership isn’t motivation. It’s an operating system.
Most organizations don’t fail because they lack talented people. They fail because complexity overwhelms communication, accountability disappears, and leaders spend more time reacting than executing.
That’s the problem Michael J. Penney has spent his career solving.
Michael is a United States Marine Corps combat veteran, patented inventor, entrepreneur, author, and internationally recognized leadership speaker. Following three combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, he served as an infantry instructor, Combat Marksmanship Coach and Trainer, Master Instructor Trainer, curriculum developer, and Special Operations Embedded Advisor Team Leader—training military leaders to plan, communicate, and execute under pressure.
Over the course of his military and civilian careers, he has trained more than 50,000 military personnel, executives, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, government leaders, and nonprofit organizations.
Today, Michael is best known as the creator of the 5 Paragraph Operating System (5P)—a leadership framework inspired by military operations planning that helps organizations replace chaos with clarity, alignment, accountability, and disciplined execution.
His clients span industries including healthcare, insurance, corrections, government, manufacturing, technology, construction, nonprofit leadership, and entrepreneurship. From Fortune 500 companies to founder-led businesses, organizations call on Michael when growth has outpaced communication and execution.
His presentations have taken him from the TEDx stage to universities, boardrooms, leadership retreats, military audiences, entrepreneurship conferences, and executive summits. He has spoken for organizations including the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, Duke University, Bunker Labs, Research Triangle Park, Rotary International, Better Homes & Gardens, MidMichigan Health, Curi Insurance, Luther Hodges Business Ethics Initiative, the Hugh Shelton Leadership Center, and numerous private executive leadership retreats.
Michael’s keynote presentations—including What’s Your IED?, DOMINATE, The 5 Paragraph Business Plan, and Would You Invite Me Over for Dinner?—challenge audiences to rethink leadership, organizational culture, and personal responsibility. His style combines battlefield experience, practical business systems, humor, storytelling, and actionable tools that leaders can implement immediately.
People don’t hire Michael because they want motivation.
They hire him because they want an operating system that works.
They want leaders who communicate clearly, execute consistently, and build organizations that achieve extraordinary results without sacrificing the people who make those results possible.
Michael is the Founder, CEO, and Chairman of Truth Trench Think Tank, where he leads research and initiatives focused on leadership, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and societal benefit. He also leads Truth Trench Accelerator and Truth Trench Ventures, helping founders build businesses capable of creating lasting impact.
Whether speaking to a room of entrepreneurs, coaching executive leadership teams, or standing before thousands on stage, Michael’s mission remains unchanged:
Master yourself. DOMINATE your business. Seek God in all things.
