Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus was a Roman patrician, elder statesman, and triumphant military leader of the early Roman Republic who became a legendary figure of Roman virtue— in particular for his civic virtue—by the time of the late Republic. He was a figure admired and revered by the founding fathers of the United States of America. The use of power granted to him and his immediate release of that power is something which George Washington cited and took to heart, having done it three times in the early stages of our Republic. Once as the commander and chief and twice as President; he was willing to commit himself to Mt. Vernon after only a single term. He set the president for what would become the law, two terms, 8 years and you’re out. But who really set the president in George’s mind?

Written by, at the time, Senator John F. Kennedy in his Pulitzer Prize winning book, “Profiles ln Courage”, the story of Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar deserves to be remembered. He lived up to his namesake, both in his given name and that of his kin. He has been heralded and harangued for his part in the Civil War era politics of his day. Here is his story as told by JFK, read aloud by Michael J. Penney.

Stay tuned, as I will be unveiling other stories that lead to modern day habbenings. The intention of this episode is to kick off a series that will surround the legacy of Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus who made such an impact on our founding fathers that societies in Washington D.C. still practice their rites to this day.
